About Us

History

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Ilorin formally came into existence following the approval of the Senate of the University of Ilorin at its 205th Meeting of 2nd December, 2009. The Faculty had as its immediate priority/mandate, the establishment and running of a five-year undergraduate degree programme that would lead to the award of Bachelor of Pharmacy to deserving students. Other mandates include the institution and mounting of postgraduate and non-degree professional courses. It started with five departments, namely:

  1. Department of Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacy Practice;
  2. Department of Pharmacognosy & Drug Development;
  3. Department of Pharmaceutics & Industrial Pharmacy;
  4. Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology;
  5. Department of Pharmaceutical & Medicinal Chemistry; and the
  6. Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology & Biotechnology was carved out of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy in 2014.

Presently, there are a total of six academic departments in the Faculty.

At its inception, the Faculty took over the physical facilities of the then Works and Estate Department of the University. A building complex comprising of 312 seats lecture theatre, three lecture rooms and four laboratories with attached toilet facilities was added to the existing structure in 2013. To enhance the quality of service delivery, construction of additional facilities was commenced in 2014.  The first phase of the administrative building housing the Dean’s office and three departments, and a new laboratory structure housing four laboratories had since been completed and now in use. The construction of the second phase of the administrative building as well as the Model Pharmacy is in the pipeline.

In the course of its existence and in the drive to improve the quality of its outputs, the Faculty has been able to establish collaborations and liaisons with several institutions both locally e.g. University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin; African Centre for Herbal Research Ilorin (ACHRI); nationally e.g. Faculties of Pharmacy of: Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and University of Ibadan, Ibadan; Faculties of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and University of Lagos, Idi-Araba; and internationally e.g. Department of Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom; Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand; etc.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) Management Committee at its 492nd Meeting held on the 22nd of June 2016 approved the establishment of the six-year Doctor of Pharmacy programme in Nigerian universities. The NUC Resource Verification Exercise for the Faculty was conducted precisely on the 29th and 30th of April 2019 following which approval was granted for the enrollment of students for the programme during the 2019/2020 admission via the UTME and the Direct entry modes. The professional (Pharmacy Council of Nigeria i.e. PCN) Accreditation Exercise for the programme was also conducted from 17th – 20th of June 2019 and full accreditation status was granted to the Faculty on the 19th of July 2019.
